We left Samara on a secondary road along the pacific, but after one hour of driving through jungle and crossing the odd river we decided to hit the main road and get to the border with Nicaragua. The kids complained I wasn't fun anymore but deep down I really wanted to get lost in Costa Rica and NOT have to get back to reality...
A couple hours later, we arrived at the border only to wish we were back in the jungle, crossing rivers and pretending we didn't need to get home. We didn't have to wait behind the trucks but we had to drive one the wrong side of the road for about 4 km.
Just on the other side in Nicaragua, we were treated to the beautiful sight of Ometepe Volcano.
We pulled into the beach town of San Juan de Sur, found a place to stay and hit the beach for a walk/swim. SJS is a lively place with loads of bars and restaurants along the promenade. Our hostel was simple but cheap and we were able to get some laundry done....oh... about 25 lbs worth of laundry that cost more than our room.
We treated ourselves to some great sushi and cold drinks until Gabriel fell asleep at the table.
